The theme of the September 2026 issue, Pile Performance and Piling Mechanism, highlights the fundamental relationship between pile installation processes and soil behaviour in modern geotechnical engineering. As discussed, in From Interface to Installation Mechanics: Soil-Pile Interaction in Press-in Piles Based on Laboratory Tests, interface resistance evolves with confinement and surface characteristics during installation, providing new insight into the mechanisms governing shaft resistance in press-in piles. Complementing this perspective, the featured paper on estimating soil failure parameters from Press-in data demonstrates how installation records can be used to better understand ground conditions and improve the evaluation of soil strength parameters. Together, these contributions illustrate how ongoing research is advancing both the scientific understanding and practical application of pile behaviour.
This issue also showcases the practical value of engineering innovation. The technical report on RC encasement methods presents effective approaches for protecting and strengthening marine steel structures, while the On-site Interview Report from the Jakarta Sewerage Development Project highlights the successful application of Press-in technology in a challenging urban environment.
